The at sign (@) is a typographical symbol meaning "at" or "at the rate of," originally used in commerce: 12 widgets @ $5 each.
Since the rise of email in the 1990s, its primary function has been separating usernames from domain names in email addresses: jane@example.com.
On social media platforms, @ precedes usernames to tag or mention someone: Thanks @john for the tip.
