assays

Chemical composition checks

Assays are tests that analyze a substance to determine its composition, quality, or potency.

The word appears most often in scientific and medical contexts: laboratory assays, drug assays, the assay detected trace amounts of lead.

In older usage, to assay meant to attempt or try—a sense now largely replaced by essay as a verb.

The testing sense dominates: to assay a sample is to subject it to analysis.
