in-vitro

Outside the body

In vitro describes biological processes occurring outside a living organism, typically in laboratory glassware—test tubes, petri dishes, or other controlled environments.

The Latin means "in glass." It contrasts with in vivo (in a living body).

In-vitro fertilization joins egg and sperm in a lab before implanting the embryo.
