artificial horizon

Pilot's level reference

An artificial horizon is an instrument that shows an aircraft's orientation relative to the earth's horizon, displaying whether the plane is climbing, diving, or banking.

Essential for flying in clouds or at night when the real horizon isn't visible.

Also called an attitude indicator.

In navigation, an artificial horizon can be a device providing a level reference surface when the natural horizon is obscured.
