degenerative condition

Worsening health state

A degenerative condition is a disease or disorder that progressively worsens over time, typically involving the gradual breakdown of tissue or organ function.

The term appears most often in medical contexts: Alzheimer's is a degenerative condition affecting memory and cognition, arthritis and other degenerative conditions of the joints.

Unlike acute illnesses, degenerative conditions follow a slow, often irreversible decline.
