anti-apartheid movement
South African resistance
The anti-apartheid movement was the international campaign to end apartheid—South Africa's system of racial segregation and white minority rule that lasted from 1948 to the early 1990s.
The movement combined activism within South Africa with global pressure through boycotts, divestment campaigns, and sanctions: Universities faced pressure to divest from companies doing business in South Africa.
The movement achieved its primary goal when apartheid was dismantled and Nelson Mandela was elected president in 1994.
