black consciousness
African identity movement
Black consciousness is a political and philosophical movement emphasizing pride in Black identity, history, and culture as a response to systemic racism and colonialism.
The term is particularly associated with Steve Biko and the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa during the 1960s and 70s, though similar movements emerged independently elsewhere.
Black consciousness rejects assimilation into white-dominated society, instead advocating psychological liberation and self-determination: Black consciousness taught us to love ourselves first.
