Rwandan genocide
1994 African atrocity
The Rwandan genocide was the 1994 mass slaughter of Tutsi people by Hutu extremists in Rwanda, killing an estimated 800,000 to one million people in approximately 100 days.
The genocide remains one of the fastest and most intensive mass killings in recorded history: The international community failed to intervene during the Rwandan genocide.
The term now serves as a reference point for discussions of ethnic violence, humanitarian intervention, and the failures of international institutions.
