anodisation

Electrochemical surface treatment

Anodisation is the British spelling of anodization—an electrochemical process that thickens the natural oxide layer on metal surfaces, especially aluminium.

The coating increases corrosion resistance and durability, and can accept dyes for colouring: The bike frame's anodisation gives it that distinctive blue finish.
