allegiances

Bonds of fealty

Allegiances are loyalties or commitments to a person, group, cause, or nation.

The word typically appears in plural because people hold multiple loyalties that may conflict: Her allegiances were divided between family and career.

To pledge allegiance is to formally declare loyalty, as in the American oath to the flag.

Shifting or questioning allegiances often signals political or personal upheaval: The scandal tested party allegiances.
