aglet

Shoestring's plastic end

An aglet is the small plastic or metal sheath wrapped around the end of a shoelace or drawstring cord.

It keeps the fibers from fraying and makes the lace easier to thread through eyelets.

The word comes from the French for "needle," which is what an aglet resembles and functions as when you're lacing up shoes.
