acquaintanceship

Not quite friendship

Acquaintanceship is the state of being acquainted with someone—knowing them, but not intimately.

It describes a relationship more distant than friendship: Our acquaintanceship began at a conference and never deepened.

The word also refers to the range of people one knows: He had a wide acquaintanceship in political circles.
