collaborating

Joining forces creatively

Collaborating is working together with others toward a shared goal.

The term is neutral in most contexts—artists collaborate on projects, scientists collaborate on research.

But it carries a dark historical sense: during wartime, collaborating often meant cooperating with enemy occupiers, especially Nazi forces: He was accused of collaborating with the Germans.

Context usually makes clear which sense is intended.
