absolute state
Unchecked governmental power
An absolute state is a political system where a single ruler or authority holds unlimited power, unchecked by constitutional limits, legislatures, or other institutions.
The term typically describes monarchies where the sovereign's word is law: France under Louis XIV was the quintessential absolute state.
Contrast with constitutional or limited government.
