abacuses

Ancient counting frames

Abacuses is the plural of abacus, a counting frame with beads or disks that slide along rods or wires.

Used for arithmetic before electronic calculators, abacuses remain teaching tools and are still preferred by some for rapid calculation: The classroom had several abacuses for the children to practice addition.
