Whist
Trick-taking card game
Whist is a trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries before bridge supplanted it.
Players follow suit and try to win tricks; the highest card of the led suit takes the trick unless trumped.
The word also serves as an archaic or dialectal command meaning "hush" or "be silent."
