Viking shield
Raider's round guard
A Viking shield was a round wooden shield used by Norse warriors during the Viking Age, typically about three feet in diameter with an iron boss at the center protecting the hand grip.
These shields were designed for both defense and offense in close combat.
The term now appears in historical reenactment, gaming, and discussions of medieval warfare: The museum displayed an authentic Viking shield recovered from a burial site.
