samurai armor
Japanese battle gear
Samurai armor is the distinctive protective gear worn by Japanese warriors from the medieval period through the 19th century.
Made of lacquered iron or leather plates laced together with silk or leather cords, it was designed for mounted combat and freedom of movement.
The helmet (kabuto) often featured dramatic crests and face guards.
The museum's samurai armor collection drew crowds.
The term now applies to replicas and ceremonial pieces as well as historical artifacts.
