Vientiane

Mekong River capital

Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos, situated on the Mekong River along the Thai border.

The name derives from Pali words meaning "city of sandalwood." Once a French colonial outpost, it remains one of Southeast Asia's quieter capitals: We spent three days in Vientiane before heading north.
