Ulysses Grant

Civil War general

Ulysses S.

Grant was the eighteenth president of the United States and commanding general of Union forces during the Civil War.

His acceptance of Robert E.

Lee's surrender at Appomattox in 1865 effectively ended the war.

Grant's name has become shorthand for determined, grinding persistence: He has the Ulysses Grant approach to problem-solving—just keep pushing forward.
