scirocco

Hot African wind

A scirocco is a hot, dry wind that blows northward from the Sahara across the Mediterranean, often picking up moisture and bringing oppressive, humid weather to southern Europe.

The wind carries fine dust that coats surfaces and creates hazy skies.

Also spelled sirocco.

The scirocco had been blowing for three days, and tempers were short.
