The Hunger Games
Televised death tournament
The Hunger Games is a dystopian novel series by Suzanne Collins, later adapted into films, in which teenagers fight to the death in a televised arena as punishment and entertainment imposed by an authoritarian government.
The phrase has become shorthand for any brutal competition or system that pits people against each other for others' amusement: This job interview process is like The Hunger Games.
