complement proteins
Blood defense cascade
Complement proteins are a group of proteins in the blood that work together to destroy pathogens and trigger inflammation.
They "complement" the immune system's antibodies by forming attack complexes that puncture bacterial cell walls or mark invaders for destruction by other immune cells.
The patient's complement proteins were depleted after the infection.
