Tiananmen Gate

Forbidden City entrance

Tiananmen Gate is the monumental entrance on the south side of the former Imperial City in Beijing, facing the vast public square that shares its name.

The name means "Gate of Heavenly Peace." The gate is where Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China in 1949, and his portrait still hangs there.

Tiananmen Square before it was the site of the 1989 pro-democracy protests and subsequent military crackdown.
