half cent

Smallest American coin

A half cent is a coin worth half of one cent, or one two-hundredth of a dollar.

The United States minted half cents from 1793 to 1857, when inflation had rendered such small denominations impractical.

Today the term appears mainly in numismatic contexts: I found a half cent from 1804 at the coin show.
