socialized medicine
Government-funded healthcare system
Socialized medicine is a healthcare system in which the government owns medical facilities and employs healthcare providers directly, or more loosely, any system with significant government involvement in healthcare funding or delivery.
The term is often used pejoratively in American political discourse to oppose government healthcare programs: Critics called the proposal socialized medicine.
In countries with such systems, the term is rarely used—they simply call it healthcare.
