Sméagol

Sméagol is a fictional character from J.R.R.

Tolkien's *The Lord of the Rings*, the original hobbit-like identity of the creature who becomes Gollum after centuries of possession by the One Ring.

The name represents his uncorrupted self, and Tolkien uses the dual identity to dramatize the Ring's corrupting influence—Sméagol and Gollum often argue as split personalities.

In broader usage, invoking Sméagol (rather than Gollum) suggests someone's better nature struggling against darker impulses: His Sméagol side wanted to help, but Gollum won out.
