Shelob
Shelob is the giant spider in J.R.R.
Tolkien's *The Lord of the Rings*, a creature of malevolent hunger who guards a pass into Mordor.
She descends from Ungoliant, a primordial spider-spirit.
The name combines "she" with an archaic word for spider.
Shelob has become a byword for monstrous arachnids in fantasy contexts: That thing in the basement was giving major Shelob vibes.
