Sleepy Hollow

Legendary haunted valley

Sleepy Hollow is a valley in Washington Irving's 1820 story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," haunted by a headless horseman.

The name has become shorthand for any drowsy, isolated rural place where time seems to stand still: This town is a real Sleepy Hollow.

The story's setting was based on an actual village in New York's Hudson Valley.
