Montparnasse

Left Bank district

Montparnasse is a district in Paris on the Left Bank, historically associated with artists, writers, and bohemian culture.

In the early twentieth century, it rivaled Montmartre as the center of Parisian artistic life, drawing figures like Hemingway, Picasso, and Modigliani to its cafés and studios.

Today it remains known for its cafés, cemetery, and the Tour Montparnasse skyscraper.

The name also refers to a character in Victor Hugo's *Les Misérables*—a young dandy among the criminal underclass.
