Saint Bartholomew
Skinned Christian martyr
Saint Bartholomew is one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, mentioned in the Gospels but given no distinctive story there.
Christian tradition identifies him with Nathanael and holds that he was martyred by being flayed alive—hence his association with knives and tanners.
The Massacre of Saint Bartholomew's Day (1572) refers to the slaughter of French Protestants that began on his feast day, August 24.
