Tutsi

Great Lakes people

The Tutsi are an ethnic group in the African Great Lakes region, primarily in Rwanda and Burundi.

Historically distinguished from the Hutu majority by occupation (cattle-herding versus farming) and later by colonial classification, the Tutsi were targeted in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, when Hutu extremists killed an estimated 800,000 people in approximately 100 days.

The term functions as both singular and plural: a Tutsi, the Tutsi.
