Roman dictator
Emergency supreme commander
A Roman dictator was a magistrate granted absolute authority during emergencies in the ancient Roman Republic.
Unlike modern dictators, the position was constitutional and temporary—typically limited to six months or until the crisis passed.
The dictator suspended normal checks on power to act decisively in war or civil unrest.
Cincinnatus was appointed dictator, defeated Rome's enemies, then returned to his farm.
The office's later abuse, particularly by Sulla and Julius Caesar, contributed to the Republic's fall.
