Roman column

Classical architectural pillar

A Roman column is an architectural support pillar in the classical styles developed in ancient Rome—Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, or Composite.

These columns typically feature a base, a cylindrical shaft (often fluted), and a decorative capital.

The term applies both to ancient structures and to the neoclassical columns found on courthouses, banks, and government buildings: The facade featured four Roman columns flanking the entrance.
