Greek column

Acropolis structural element

A Greek column is an upright pillar in one of the three classical orders of ancient Greek architecture: Doric (plain, sturdy), Ionic (scrolled capitals), or Corinthian (ornate, leaf-carved capitals).

These designs have been imitated for millennia in government buildings, banks, and universities to evoke permanence and classical authority: The courthouse facade featured massive Greek columns.
