Robert Oppenheimer

Robert Oppenheimer was an American physicist who led the Manhattan Project, the secret World War II effort that developed the atomic bomb.

His later opposition to hydrogen bomb development and security clearance revocation made him a symbol of the moral complexities scientists face when their work has destructive applications.

The line Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds—his quote from Hindu scripture after witnessing the first nuclear test—captures the weight of that legacy.
