Berkeley

California public university

Berkeley is a city in the San Francisco Bay Area, home to the University of California's flagship campus.

The name evokes progressive politics, intellectual culture, and 1960s counterculture—the Free Speech Movement began there.

In philosophy, Berkeley refers to George Berkeley, the 18th-century Irish bishop who argued that material objects exist only as perceptions in the mind: Berkeley's idealism influenced later thinkers.

The city was named after him.
