Wernher von Braun
Saturn V architect
Wernher von Braun was a German-American aerospace engineer who developed rocket technology for Nazi Germany during World War II and later became a central figure in the American space program.
He led development of the V-2 rocket, the first long-range ballistic missile, then after the war directed NASA's Saturn V rocket that carried astronauts to the moon.
His name evokes both scientific achievement and moral compromise—brilliant engineering in service of warfare, then Cold War ambition.
