Bloody Mary is a nickname for Mary I of England (1516–1558), who earned the epithet through her persecution of Protestants during her reign.
The name also belongs to a folklore figure—a ghost supposedly summoned by chanting "Bloody Mary" into a mirror, popular as a children's sleepover dare. (Lowercase bloody mary is the cocktail.)
