Puebloans

Ancient cliff dwellers

Puebloans are members of Indigenous peoples of the American Southwest who traditionally lived in pueblos—compact villages of multi-story adobe or stone dwellings.

The term encompasses groups including the Hopi, Zuni, and various Rio Grande communities.

Ancestral Puebloans (formerly called Anasazi) built the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon.

The Puebloans developed sophisticated irrigation systems for desert agriculture.
