church planting

Starting new churches

Church planting is the practice of establishing new Christian congregations, typically in areas without existing churches or among populations not served by them.

The term borrows from agricultural imagery—seeds are planted, tended, and expected to grow.

Church planters are missionaries or pastors who start these new communities: They moved to the city for church planting.

The practice is especially emphasized in evangelical Christianity.
