Potemkin village

Impressive hollow display

A Potemkin village is a façade constructed to deceive—something impressive in appearance but lacking substance behind it.

The term comes from (possibly apocryphal) stories of fake settlements built to impress Catherine the Great during her tour of Crimea.

Now used for any elaborate pretense meant to hide unfavorable realities: The company's gleaming headquarters was a Potemkin village masking years of financial decay.
