Northstar
Ursa Minor's tip
Northstar is a guiding principle or ultimate goal that directs decisions and strategy: Customer satisfaction is our northstar.
The metaphor comes from Polaris, the star that has guided travelers for centuries by marking true north.
In business contexts, a northstar metric is the single measurement a company prioritizes above all others.
Also spelled north star.
