slave rebellion
Captives rise up
A slave rebellion is an organized uprising by enslaved people against their enslavers.
Such rebellions occurred throughout the history of slavery, from ancient Rome to the nineteenth-century Americas: The Haitian slave rebellion led to the first independent Black republic.
The term also applies to smaller-scale resistance: Nat Turner's slave rebellion terrified Virginia slaveholders in 1831.
