Providence
Smallest state's capital
Providence is the capital and largest city of Rhode Island, located at the head of Narragansett Bay.
Founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, it was named for what he saw as God's merciful guidance after his exile from Massachusetts.
The city is home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. (Lowercase providence means divine care or foresight.)
