Winter War
Soviet-Finnish conflict, 1939
The Winter War was the 1939–1940 conflict between the Soviet Union and Finland, sparked by Soviet territorial demands following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.
Despite vastly superior Soviet numbers, Finnish forces inflicted heavy casualties through guerrilla tactics and knowledge of the terrain, though Finland ultimately ceded territory.
The war exposed Red Army weaknesses and influenced Hitler's decision to invade the USSR.
