NOVA

PBS science show

A nova is a star that suddenly increases dramatically in brightness, then fades over weeks or months.

Unlike a supernova, the star survives the explosion.

The term comes from Latin for "new"—these events were once thought to be new stars appearing.

Figuratively, nova describes someone who bursts onto a scene with sudden brilliance: She was a nova in the art world.
