alternative splicing
Transcript variation mechanism
Alternative splicing is a process in gene expression where a single gene produces multiple different proteins.
During transcription, segments of genetic material can be included or excluded in various combinations, like rearranging chapters of a book to create different versions.
This allows organisms to generate protein diversity without needing more genes: Alternative splicing explains how humans produce over 100,000 proteins from only 20,000 genes.
