Mr Hyde
Inner monster unleashed
Mr Hyde is the evil alter ego of Dr Jekyll in Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella, a respectable physician who transforms into a murderous creature through a potion of his own invention.
The name has become shorthand for a person's hidden dark side or violent nature: When he drinks, his Mr Hyde comes out.
Someone with unpredictable mood swings might be called a Jekyll and Hyde.
