Quasimodo
Notre-Dame's deformed ringer
Quasimodo is the hunchbacked bell-ringer of Notre-Dame cathedral in Victor Hugo's 1831 novel, a figure of physical deformity hiding inner goodness.
The name has become shorthand for anyone grotesquely misshapen or isolated by appearance: He shuffled around like Quasimodo after throwing out his back.
The name comes from the Latin for the Sunday after Easter, when the character was abandoned as an infant.
